Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to take on jobs such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student at the school located in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. She left the school she attended after only two years in order to pursue the profession of acting. This path was fraught with challenges. After obtaining a position in New York as a model for a magazine that dealt with detectives, she had a difficult time trying to secure jobs on stage. Her next job was as an "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and returned to Boston. There she earned a living as an usherette by in the daytime, while at night she performing with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first job as an actor. She was a drama student in The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
